The graceful, open plan design of Villa Laura draws you inside, revealing the spacious and bright interiors. Spread over four levels, there’s 1,200 m2 of living spaces to enjoy with family and friends, with every comfort catered for. Dappled sunlight falls in through the large windows, leading you through each room and lighting up wooden accents and the stripped back décor.

From conversations in the central living room with its plush sofas to gourmet breakfasts in the dining room awash with the ocean breeze, each area seems to encourage spending quality time with those closest to you. The atmosphere changes as you ascend upstairs to the bedrooms, elegant and comfortable spaces that promise quiet moments of reflection and relaxation while taking in the beautiful ocean views.

Gorgeous outdoor living spaces continue to embrace the relationship Villa Laura has with the light and space of Cascais. An upper-level balcony extending from Villa Laura’s northern façade enjoys captivating ocean views, a perfect setting to savour the sunset each evening with a crisp glass of Portuguese wine.

Down below, the garden space is ideal for leisurely days spent in the sun, entertaining, and dining under the stars. There’s a plunge pool for refreshing moments of relaxation, plush lounges for unwinding with a sunset cocktail, and a long table for gourmet dinners in the cool coastal air.

But best of all is the private staircase etched into the cliffs, delivering you onto the golden sand of Praia da Azarujinha within seconds. This gated entrance to the beach is reserved for your use only, ensuring you can enjoy the oceanfront without any worries.

Dating to the 19th century, Villa Laura was designed by architect Gaston Landeck, built during a time when Portuguese royalty and European aristocrats flocked to Cascais to soak up the near-endless sunshine.

The royals’ affair with Cascais first began with a visit from King Luís I in the 1870s. He fell in love with the golden bays along the coast, and every September onwards, took up residence in Cascais with his family. The Portuguese royal court followed, as did plenty of European aristocrats when they caught wind of the good food and even better weather. Development began in earnest up and down the coast, and it was during this time that Villa Laura was built in Estoril overlooking the golden sands of Praia da Azarujinha.

Since then, Villa Laura has been carefully restored by international award-winning architect Manuel Aires Mateus, with an updated modern design that savours the home’s original charisma while also bringing a whole new character to the space. With a strong focus on minimalism and dematerialisation, the centre stage of this elegant private villa in Cascais has been given over to the light and space that first captured the imagination of King Luís I, a poetic display of earthy textures, playful dappled sunlight, and alluring ocean views.

The memory of Villa Laura’s history was further cemented in the new design by being named after its former owner, a charismatic character who inspired Portugal’s famed lyricist Carlos T to pen several stories about this place.
